Chris Blue Beach Restaurant, Curium Bay
This beachfront restaurant is located in the heart of Curium Bay, an area surrounded by existing historic antiquities and a long sandy beach well known for its sea sport activities. The main challenge of this project was to design around the extreme weather conditions both in the summer and especially in the winter season and with an existing building which is constantly exposed to onshore strong winds and tidal waves.
A series of overlapping oval shaped canopies wrap cover the entire building providing natural shading and shelter from the strong winds. The canopies are made from a rigid steel structure frame supported by metal columns and detailed fixing brackets to the existing building.
The interior layout has been completely stripped out and re designed to maximise the dining areas and solve the operational issues of customer and waiter traffic. A wire mesh structure with pebbles has been designed to disguise the existing column layout and create light features and a open fireplace for the interior space.
The project is designed with a second phase which extends the dining areas and canopies on to the roof of the existing building introducing a new glass lift with panoramic views of the historic site and sea.
