Pissouri Village Square Master Plan, 1988
A crossroad in the village served as a village square since Independence in 1960. Before that time a gathering of more that seven persons in a street was illegal and considered a riot. This regulation left all Cyprus towns and countryside without any squares and piazzas. Our office prepared a master plan and designed a new peripheral road on the outskirts of the village. The central crossroad was made pedestrian and all existing features were used in order to create a geometric link that marked all new floor surfaces and gave purpose to the suggested shapes and patterns. A new staircase linked the village church and town hall with the square and gave the project its civic character. The surrounding cafes and restaurants expanded their areas into the square encouraging openess and social interaction.
