Nicosia Town Hall, competition entry (Highly Commended) 1995
This new Nicosia town hall is placed in the historic centre of the town within the Venetian walls. The structure is kept low rise and courtyards were created to give as much light as possible to the centre of the building. A diagonal axis is connecting the east and west elevations while at the same time is offering to pedestrians a shortcut encouraging the public to use the building on a day to day basis. Its civic role is reinforced further with a gallery, a small theatre, a sculpture garden and a multifunctional room celebrating civic hospitality to the public. Local Yerolakos sandstone cladding connects the building to its surroundings and the Venetian walls.
